This is an area in which we are becoming increasingly active and has developed significantly over the past 2 years.
Another term you may hear for this activity is "corporate venturing".
There are a surprising number of companies who act almost like private investors. These companies are usually looking
to extend their operations into similar fields. They won't necessarily be competitors nor be looking to acquire or take
control, although one must be very careful and aware of hidden agendas when operating in this market. However, these
companies normally have cash, resources, and can act quickly.
Sometimes the best solution for a company in difficulty is to 'marry' in some way to another business where certain
elements of the business can be shared and costs cut accordingly. On some occasions this process will feel like an
acquisition, however if the entrepreneur is faced with the closure of the business or a solution where he or she
retains some interest in the future, well the answer is usually simple.
As with all of our work, the key is to help our client, the entrepreneur, and find the best solution. Sometimes the
best solution is a tie up with another firm rather than private investment.
